The aim of the interdisciplinary joint project M-WISE is to sustainably improve the software development by applying knowledge management. In order to achieve this goal methods for modeling knowledge intensive business processes are applied and enhanced in the domain of software development. One aim of the project therefore is the modeling and improvement of knowledge intensive processes. Analog to other knowledge intensive processes like product development they are characterized by a high degree of innovation, creativity, autonomy in decision making and they usually can not be fully planned. In software development most of the creation of value is done in such processes that are adjudge to have a high potential in optimization.

Classical methods of business process modeling and analysis and well known software development methods can not describe these processes appropriately. Within the project, innovative methods are applied and developed in order to represent and improve these complex software development processes.

Amongst the methods is the Knowledge Management and Description Language (KMDL®) that is developed by Prof. Gronau and his team. The KMDL® is a modeling and analysis language that allows to systematically model and analyze knowledge conversions within knowledge intensive business process and knowledge intensive parts of conventional business processes. Therefore the KMDL® is appropriate for modeling knowledge intensive business processes according to the criteria mentioned above. In the research project M-WISE the method is used to model and analyze software development processes. Therefore the existing method KMDL® was adopted to the domain of software development and the derivate KMDL-SE was developed. On basis of KMDL-SE models weaknesses like knowledge monopolies, not used knowledge and not satisfied knowledge needs can be identified and arrangements to improve knowledge intensive software development processes can be derived.

M-WISE is a research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the research campain "Software Engineering 2006".
